Basic Beliefs

(from “Our Doctrinal Heritage”, The Book of Discipline 2004)

1. We believe in God as our Creator and Father.

“The created order is designed for the well being of all creatures and as a place of humanity living in
          covenant with God."

2. We believe that all people stand in need of God’s redemption.

"We have broken covenant with and become estranged from God.” In being separated from God we "wound ourselves and others, and wreak havoc in the natural order."

3We believe salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

“ Scripture witnesses to the redeeming love of God in Jesus’s life and teachings, his atoning death, his resurrection, his sovereign presence in history, his triumph over the powers of evil and death, and his promised return. Because God truly loves us in spite of our willful sin, God judges us, summons us to repentance, pardons us, receives us by that grace given to us in Jesus Christ, and gives us hope of life eternal.”

4. We believe God’s redemptive love is realized in human life by the activity of the Holy Spirit.

5. We believe we are part of Christ’s universal Church

“We are initiated and incorporated into the Church by Baptism… Through regular celebration of Holy Communion, we participate in the risen presence of Jesus Christ and are nourished for faithful discipleship.”

6. We recognize the reign of God as a present and future reality.

“Wherever persons are being made new creatures in Christ, wherever the insights and resources of the gospel are brought to bear on the life of the world, God’s reign is already effective in its healing and renewing power.

“We also look to the end time in which God’s work will be fulfilled. This prospect gives hope in our present actions…”

7. We share with many Christian denominations a recognition of the authority of Scripture in matters of faith .

8. We see God’s grace and human activity working together in the relationship of faith and good works.

9. We believe that love of God is linked with love of neighbor. Personal salvation involves Christian mission and service to the world.
